Hong Kong regulators set to ban retail Bitcoin trading
Hong Kong regulators have moved to ban retail trading in Hong Kong after months of intense speculation about a likely prohibition. According to a report by Reuters on Friday, the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau of Hong Kong has released the results of its consultation on a possible retail crypto trading ban, which began back in November 2020. As part of its conclusions, Hong Kong’s FSTB called for a comprehensive licensing regime for crypto exchanges while restricting trading only to qualified investors. Per Hong Kong law, only individuals with portfolios worth 8 million Hong Kong dollars (about $1 million) …

Cryptocurrency derivative exchange launches worldwide trading contest
A crypto exchange has launched a brand-new contest to find the ultimate trading masters. Bityard, which is based in Singapore, says a maximum price pool of up to 60,000 USDT is up for grabs — rising incrementally from 5,000 USDT depending on how many participants decide to get involved. Competitors have the chance to band together in teams as they put strategies through their paces in the choppy crypto markets. The team that comes in first place will share 30% of the total prize pool between them, with 20% earmarked for the group in second place, and 10% for those …

These three cryptocurrencies weathered the storm as Bitcoin plunged
As Bitcoin goes, so go we all. It’s etched into the consciousness of crypto traders because the price of altcoins so often trends closely with the price of Bitcoin (BTC). If the original cryptocurrency rallies, so does the rest of the crypto market. Whenever BTC tumbles, it invariably drags its smaller siblings down with it. Yet, as the crypto industry matures and many blockchain projects begin to generate their own unique value, the link between the price of Bitcoin and that of many alternative digital assets grows more tenuous. The fact that the BTC dominance indicator currently sits at a …

Bear market? Analyst weighs in after Bitcoin drops 50% from its $65K all-time high
On April 14 Bitcoin price hit a new all-time high at $64,850 and many of the crypto sector’s top analysts were calling for BTC to carry on to at least $100,000 before the rally showed any signs of possible exhaustion. Fast forward 37 days and Bitcoin now trades nearly 50% down from its all-time high after dropping as low as $30,000 to mark the sharpest correction in BTC price since March 2020. The general reaction among analysts has been mixed as some cite various metrics which suggest that $30,000 is the bottom for BTC. Others advise caution as the failure …

Gotta catch ‘em all! Platform offers NFTs backed by real Pokémon cards
A unique NFT marketplace that is backed by physical assets has completed a live ask-me-anything session on Cointelegraph’s YouTube channel. Digible aims to offer a crypto-focused environment for rare items that exist in the real world. This means that, if you were to buy a coveted Pokémon card, you’d be able to receive it in the form of a nonfungible token — with this platform storing it safely on your behalf. Daniel Pustelnik, who co-founded Digible, said he became aware of NFTs back in 2018, and started to explore the wide range of use cases for this distinctive asset class. …

Buy or hodl, says investor Raoul Pal as Bitcoin price chart hints at 'falling wedge'
Raoul Pal wants Bitcoin investors to mobilize their trades against Elon Musk. The macro investment strategist advised traders to either accumulate or preserve their Bitcoin (BTC) holdings just as the flagship cryptocurrency suffered massive declines over the weekend and at the beginning of this week. In retrospect, bulls came under pressure after Elon Musk started rattling the cryptocurrency market. On May 12, the billionaire entrepreneur reversed his company Tesla's decision to accept Bitcoin payments for its electric vehicles, citing environmental issues related to the Bitcoin mining industry. Nevertheless, he noted that Tesla would keep holding more than a billion dollars' …

Data shows the ‘Bitcoin price drops ahead of CME expiries’ claim is a myth
Historically, activity surrounding the Bitcoin (BTC) monthly futures and options expiry has been blamed for weakening bullish momentum. A few studies from 2019 found a 2.3% average drop in BTC price 40 hours before the CME futures settlement date. However, as Cointelegraph reported in June 2020, the effect faded away. While 2020 seems to have rejected the potential negative impact of CME expiries, so far, the current year appears to validate the theory. Bitcoin’s price has been suppressed ahead of futures and options expiry in the first three months of 2021. Some investors and traders have pointed out that Bitcoin’s …

VORTECS Report: Dammit, Musk, now you're messing with AAVE too?
Who knew what, and when did they know it? Investigating Watergate in 1973, Senator Howard Baker Jr. wanted the answer. Thanks to a couple of journalists, he eventually got it. And while the stakes may not be as high, the team at Cointelegraph Markets Pro is pretty curious about some interesting crypto data this week. The VORTECS™ Score includes sentiment analysis, tweet and trading volume, and price action as components of the algorithm — which are then weighted according to a proprietary formula based on how similar these are to historical conditions. If there is a similarity in these factors, …

Summer shorts: NANO price spike gives traders a chance to bet against the rally
When Elon Musk’s ‘Bitcoin is bad for the environment’ tweet caused a flash crash of BTC and the majority of altcoins’ prices earlier this week, a handful of digital assets headed in the opposite direction, making huge gains amid the sea of red. Those were the tokens that market themselves as environmentally friendly capitalizing on investors’ immediate instinct that Tesla might be switching to some alternative, eco-friendly cryptocurrency soon. NANO’s moment of unsustainability Among the biggest winners of the day was NANO, a decentralized cryptocurrency that relies on a consensus algorithm similar to proof of stake and that emphasizes its …

Quiet down, Elon: 5 crypto stories that didn't need Musk's Twitter antics to move markets
There’s more to crypto than Elon Musk’s frequent (and frequently misguided) tweets on the subjects of Bitcoin (BTC) and Dogecoin (DOGE). And although the brilliantly visionary CEO/Securities and Exchange Commission-baiting meme king may have positioned himself as a news cycle unto himself, crypto news has the power to influence major price action across the altcoin markets — particularly if you can be the first to react to it. Rumors and news are the true tectonic forces behind the cryptocurrency market’s dynamics. Extensive research by the Cointelegraph Markets Pro data team suggests that three types of announcements — listings, staking and …
