Here’s what to expect in this week’s markets news breakdown: Whales have been busy moving a record amount of Bitcoin (BTC). How will this affect prices? Bitcoin is long overdue for a “FOMO rally” to new all-time highs, according to Bobby Lee, the former CEO of BTCC. Does his claim have merit? Despite China’s crackdown on the crypto industry last week, Bitcoin nodes still appear to be operating in the People’s Republic, proving Bitcoin’s …
Cryptocurrency adoption continues gaining momentum in Switzerland as local financial authorities grant more regulatory approvals for crypto investment instruments. The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) has approved the Crypto Market Index Fund as the “first crypto fund according to Swiss law,” the authority officially announced on Wednesday. The fund is launched by Swiss asset manager Crypto Finance and is administered by investment management firm PvB Pernet von Ballmoos AG with custody by regulated custodian SEBA Bank AG. FINMA noted that the newly approved fund is restricted to qualified investors, investing primarily in cryptocurrencies or digital assets “based on the …
Last week was challenging for crypto traders, with Sept. 24’s FUD-triggering crypto-ban news out of China wiping out much of the gains that investors had managed to rake in earlier in the week. Between Sept. 18 and 25, the top 100 altcoins shed as much as 14.4% of their aggregate value, while Bitcoin (BTC) lost 12.5%. The number of altcoins posting double-digit returns was unusually low as well. Data from Markets Pro, Cointelegraph’s subscription-based data intelligence platform, shows that only eight assets out of the hundreds tracked gained more than 10% against the United States dollar. While trading is an …
Bitcoin bulls continued to battle with bears near the $43,000 support level on Sept. 27 as China’s crackdown on all things cryptocurrency put a halt to last week’s positive price movements and has stifled growth into the day. According to Eric Krown, a cryptocurrency trader and host of Krown’s Crypto Cave, what comes next for Bitcoin (BTC) really “depends on what timeframe you are talking about,” but he is currently focused on the more medium- to long-term outlook. In the latest episode of “The Market Report” with Cointelegraph, the cryptocurrency trader indicated that for right now, “We are probably going …
The inaugural summer of decentralized finance (DeFi) in 2020 — when millions of dollars in the form of crypto were invested into DeFi platforms — caught the attention of people around the world. And as summer 2021 proved to be another major success for DeFi, more and more people are considering taking the leap and seeing how they can get involved in the booming sector. The sums involved are not insignificant. Starting at $1 billion in February 2020, over $40 billion flowed into DeFi platforms in just one year. For those intimidated by crypto, it hasn’t helped that many DeFi …
The first half of 2021 in the crypto markets brought many comparisons to 2017. Bitcoin (BTC) was on a tear to its all-time high, the new frontier of decentralized finance emerged, and nonfungible tokens were gaining myriad celebrity endorsements. But after the initial months of euphoria and a subsequent sell-off, BTC’s performance has been far more lackluster. The recent market sell-off resulting from the Evergrande crisis has compounded fears. However, it can’t be ignored that many altcoins, particularly platform tokens, have undergone impressive runs and, in some cases, even bucked broader market trends. With hopes still high that another bull …
The Chinese government is getting more serious about cracking down on the cryptocurrency industry as state authorities are bringing forces to combat crypto operations in the country. The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) officially announced on Friday a set of new measures to fight against crypto adoption in China, including promoting stronger inter-departmental coordination in cracking down crypto activity. 10 Chinese state authorities, including the PBoC, the Cyberspace Administration of China and the Ministry of Public Security, have established a “coordination mechanism” to prevent financial players from participating in any cryptocurrency transactions. According to the announcement, the involved authorities and …
Stablecoins have emerged as significant players in the crypto market this year, driven by user demand for flexible liquidity in fiat currency times. These currencies are defined as a type of digital currency that can be pegged to underlying real-world assets or backed by them. These assets can be anything from fiat money, commodities like gold or silver, or even another cryptocurrency. As their name suggests, stablecoins are designed to have a value that stays (rather) stable like cash, a contrast to the volatility common in cryptocurrency trading today. To further illustrate this scenario, a typical fiat-backed stablecoin might involve …
Tune in to watch Cointelegraph host and analyst Benton Yaun alongside resident market experts Jordan Finneseth and Marcel Pechman. Here’s what to expect in this week’s markets news breakdown: After failing to reach $50,000, Bitcoin (BTC) slid back down to $40,000 on Monday before recovering to $44,000. What, or who, was behind this pullback? Dogecoin (DOGE) is gaining popularity even though transaction levels are at a low. Why is this happening? United States President Joe Biden nominated a new head for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Saule Omarova, who is an anti-crypto law professor. If this nomination …
Admittedly, the last few days have not been not the most pleasant time for crypto traders as the price of Bitcoin (BTC) price fell short of breaking the $50,000 threshold, then slid to the low-$40,000 range and pulled the majority of altcoins down with it. Despite this sharp downturn, a handful of tokens seemed to do much better than the rest of the market by posting weekly gains in their BTC and U.S. dollar-denominated pairs. Some traders looking to rack up their Bitcoin holdings cannot be bothered to follow an altcoins’ price dynamics against the dollar. For them, BTC slumps …
Trading app Robinhood has opened up a waitlist to test a crypto wallet for users to hold their tokens. According to a Wednesday blog post, Robinhood plans to start testing a digital wallet feature on its app that enables users to send and receive cryptocurrencies in October. The move may encourage more Robinhood users to use the app for crypto trading, as it currently only allows them to buy crypto with United States dollars and trade on the platform — users can’t deposit or withdraw in crypto. Robinhood did not specify which tokens the digital wallet would support, but the …
Avalanche (AVAX) prices recovered on Sept. 22, paring a portion of losses that hit cryptocurrencies at the beginning of this week, led by worries about potential contagion in China’s housing market. The AVAX/USD exchange rate surged by as much as 12.05% to log an intraday high at $66.08. The pair’s gains came as a part of an interim rebound that started Tuesday after it bottomed out at a local low of $50.68. As a result, AVAX’s net rebound stretched by up to 30.37%. Cointelegraph’s VORTECS™ Score also flipped bullish ahead of the Avalanche token rally. The VORTECS™ Score is an …
