Q&A: This project says it runs solely on sustainable energy — how?
The energy use and sustainability of blockchain technology is a burning topic. But some projects are seeking to ensure their activities are eco-friendly — all while giving environmentally conscious consumers an option to go green. One of them is GRNGrid. Here, founder and CMO John Errol de Vroede tells us more about the platform's sustainability credentials, how this is achieved, and why its approach to Proof-of-Stake avoids common pitfalls surrounding centralization. 1. Hello! Can you simply explain what your project does? GRNGrid is an environmentally friendly, scalable and stable Layer 1 blockchain, with novel DeFi features. These features give everyone …

Ethereum devs confirm the perpetual date for The Merge
Ethereum network is nearing the merger phase of its crucial transition from proof-of-work (PoW) mining consensus to proof-of-stake (PoS). Ethereum (ETH) devs offered a perpetual merger date during a conference call on Thursday. The conference call saw core Ethereum developer Tim Beiko, who runs core protocol meetings, propose September 19 as the tentative target date for the merger. The proposed target date didn’t face any objection from the core developers. Later, Ethereum developer superphiz.eth tweeted about the roadmap to the merger and also cleared that the proposed target date should be seen as a roadmap rather than a hard deadline. …

ECB report likens PoW to fossil fuel cars, PoS to electric vehicles
Amid the soaring inflation, the European Central Bank (ECB) has found time to sum up its concerns about the “significant carbon footprint” of Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies, which require vast amounts of computational power. ECB published the report titled “Mining the environment — is climate risk priced into crypto-assets?” on July 12. In the report, the ECB research group reinforces the environmental narrative about the battle of protocols, where the proof-of-work (PoW) concept represents a threat to the planet. In contrast, the proof-of-stake (PoS) is the only sustainable crypto option, experts argue. The article compares the amount of consumed …

Ethereum price risks ‘bear flag’ breakdown, 20% drop against Bitcoin
Ethereum’s native token, Ether (ETH), is down nearly 40% against Bitcoin (BTC) since December 2021. But, even more pain is possible for the ETH/BTC pair in the coming weeks, based on a classic technical indicator. Ethereum price risks technical breakdown The ETH/BTC chart has been forming a bear flag since early June 2022 on the three-day timeframe. In detail, bear flags are considered bearish continuation patterns that form as the price consolidates higher inside a range defined by two ascending parallel trendlines after a sharp decline. They resolve after the price breaks below the lower trendline, i.e., in the direction …

Ethereum co-founder responds to PoS critics amid upcoming Merge
While some believe that Ethereum’s upcoming shift to proof-of-stake (PoS) may push the platform to eventually surpass Bitcoin (BTC), others are taking this opportunity to make snarky remarks on Twitter, triggering a rebuttal from Vitalik Buterin, a co-founder of Ethereum. In a tweet, Bitcoiner Nick Payton called out “Proof of Stakers” and argued that voting to change the properties on PoS platforms proves that PoS assets are securities. Dear Proof of Stakers, The fact that you can vote on something to change its properties is proof that it's a security. Love, Bitcoin — Nick (@NickDPayton) July 11, 2022 Buterin responded …

Lido DAO price moves higher as the Ethereum Merge moves a step closer to completion
The upcoming Ethereum (ETH) Merge is one of the most talked-about developments in the cryptocurrency ecosystem as the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap undergoes the difficult transition from proof-of-work (PoW) to proof-of-stake (PoS). One protocol whose fate is largely tied to the successful completion of the Merge is Lido DAO (LDO), a liquid staking platform that allows users to tap into the value of their assets for use in decentralized finance and earn yield from staking. Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView shows that since LDO hit a low of $0.42 on June 30, its price has climbed …

PoS gives Ethereum the economic structure to overtake Bitcoin, says DeFi researcher
As Ethereum shifts into proof-of-stake (PoS), a decentralized finance (DeFi) researcher has argued that the platform can overtake Bitcoin's (BTC) throne as the top dog in crypto. In a Twitter thread, researcher Vivek Raman highlighted that the upcoming Ethereum Merge could create a better economic structure for the smart contract platform. According to Raman, the shift into PoS lowers Ether (ETH) inflation, gives better security and positions the crypto as a digital bond. Raman said that after the Merge, ETH inflation will drop from 4.3% to 0.22%. The researcher explained that this gives the ecosystem a 95% reduction in issuance, …

Ethereum’s failure to close above $1.3K prompts analysts to predict more downside
The Ethereum network moved one step closer to completing its transition to proof-of-stake (PoS) this week after the successful completion of its second-to-last major Merge trial on the Sepolia public test network. Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView shows that following the Sepolia Merge on July 6, the price of Ether (ETH) rallied to a high near $1,280 on July 8 but has since trended down to hit a daily low of 1,153 on July 10. With the Ethereum network nearing the home stretch in its shift to PoS, here is what analysts are saying could happen with its …

BTC bull Michael Saylor: Ethereum is ‘obviously’ a security
MicroStrategy CEO and Bitcoin (BTC) bull Michael Saylor said that Ether (ETH) is ‘obviously’ a security as he doubled down on labeling BTC as the only commodity in the crypto sector. In an interview with Altcoin Daily, Saylor was questioned on his take regarding the classification of both BTC and ETH as commodities by United States Senators such as Kirsten Gillibrand and Cynthia Lummis, along with figureheads from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Saylor provided a lengthy run down on what he thou are the fundamental differences between the Bitcoin and Ethereum …

5 events that could put an end to the current crypto bear market
Much to the chagrin of cryptocurrency investors across the ecosystem, the bear market has officially set in and brought with it devastating price collapses that have left relatively few unscathed. As the popular topic of conversation now centers on bearish predictions of how low Bitcoin (BTC) will go and how long this iteration of the crypto winter will last, those with more experience on the matter know that it’s virtually impossible to predict the bottom and it would be wise to apply those energies elsewhere. Instead of focusing on the when of the end, perhaps it’s more constructive to explore …

Ethereum 2.0 stakers face a 36.5% larger loss than ETH spot investors — Report
Ethereum investors who staked millions of dollars worth of Ether (ETH) tokens to become validators on its soon-to-launch proof-of-stake (PoS) network are now facing heavy paper losses. Ether spot traders outperform stakers by 36.5% In detail, investors have locked a little over 13 million ETH into the so-called Ethereum 2.0 smart contract since it went live in December 2020. However, there is no date when these investors can redeem their tokens alongside the 10% yield. Interestingly, around 62% of Ether tokens were deposited before the price peaked at around $4,930 in November 2021. Meanwhile, the other 38% were deposited after …

Ethereum testnet Merge mostly successful — ‘Hiccups will not delay the Merge.’
Ethereum has now completed its second-to-last major Merge trial on the public test network Sepolia, paving the way for its transition to the proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. While it's been judged mostly a success, it was not incident free. The final trial of the Merge is set to occur on the Goerli network over the next few weeks before the official Merge on the Ethereum mainnet can be given the go-ahead. Ethereum educator Anthony Sassano, who hosted the Sepolia Merge livestream on YouTube on Wednesday, confirmed on Twitter that the Merge transition went through “successfully” and added that the testnet …
