Bitmex: Tether ‘Possibly’ Has Enough Cash Reserves, Could Still Be Shut Down
Bitmex Research released an in-depth report on Tether today, Feb. 19, detailing the reasons why Tether is most likely backed by sufficient fiat reserves after all, and what problems with regulatory bodies Tether will most likely encounter in the future. Tether is a digital token backed by fiat currency, supposedly pegged 1:1 with the US dollar. Due to Tether’s lack of enough publically released bank audits, there are rumors that Tether does not actually have enough fiat in reserves to redeem all Tether tokens with US dollars if the need would arise. The Bitmex report attempts to refute those rumors …

Bitcoin Cash Passes $1,500 Again As Lead Dev Pronounces Bitcoin Dead
Bitcoin Cash (BCH) has seen another major growth spurt as the altcoin’s lead developer pronounces Bitcoin (BTC) dead. Capping what appears to be Bitcoin’s 191st life, Deadal Nix tweeted Tuesday as BCH began picking up steam that the August hard fork meant Bitcoin already no longer existed. “Bitcoin is dead. It was split in two. There is Bitcoin Cash, and Bitcoin Core/Legacy. Deal with it,” he wrote in response to a warning about BCH from online commentator Alphonse Pace. The Core community was quick to respond, Charlie Shrem noting that Nix publicly describes himself as a “pro shitlord.” Says the …

Sharp Contradictions As Hard Fork Fail Makes CEOs Relieved, Users Suspicious
Bitcoin businesses are publicly stating their relief that SegWit2x is no more, while community comments lend weight to a resurgence conspiracy. As New York Agreement (NYA) heads confirmed SegWit2x was canceled, CEOs opposed to the hard fork hailed the start of a more constructive period for Bitcoin. “When 2x was called off, it became immediately clear there’s greater consensus for a single Bitcoin Blockchain, and therefore there is greater value retained in the bitcoin ecosystem,” Steemit CEO Ned Scott said in emailed comments. “The case was made by the immediate price increase when 2x was called off.” SegWit2x futures prices …

A Minute’s Silence For Altcoins as Bitcoin Highs Slice Value Across Markets
Bitcoin’s rise over $7,200 Thursday has piled pressure on already sidelined altcoin markets, leading many into freefall. An analysis of Coinmarketcap’s top 20 altcoin listings shows a depressing picture as Bitcoin’s surge leaves many struggling to stay above multi-month lows. Notable standouts are the Bitcoin Cash fork and controversial newcomer BitConnect, opportunistically riding enthusiasm surrounding the Bitcoin Core chain. Altcoin losses extend to Ethereum, which lost over six percent in 24 hours, while fellow fork Ethereum Classic (ETC) dropped to its lowest BTC and USD price since May. Bitcoin meanwhile is posting highs elsewhere, its market dominance reaching 62.4 percent …

Following wallet provider Bitwala, F2pool’s Wang Chun said he “didn’t pull out of anything” and had only voiced support for the project “until July.” I didn't pull out of anything. I told @JihadWu long time ago that I would support segwit2x only until July. Now it is September. pic.twitter.com/L6777re9tP — Wang Chun (@f2pool_wangchun) September 1, 2017 The news marks another blow for Barry Silbert’s New York Agreement, which has faced trouble with consensus since its inception. SegWit2x was originally due …

Bitcoin Lack Of Consensus Does Not Mean Destruction: Lightning’s Russell
Lightning Network developer Rusty Russell has described a lack of consensus in Bitcoin as the “best failure mode a store-of-value system can have.” Russell made the comments concluding a blog post about how a consensus-based route to a Bitcoin hard fork would work in practice. His balanced view contrasts with current fears over the effect of November’s SegWit2x hard fork on the Bitcoin network, which is already experiencing operational changes as a result of the Bitcoin Cash hard fork in July. “[A] lack of consensus doesn’t destroy Bitcoin, it just keeps it to its current state, which is truly the …
