Ethereum Merge a 'few months after' June: Dev clears up what’s going on
The long-awaited Ethereum Merge is set for yet another delay, with developers working on the upgrade estimating a completion time a “few months after” June. Owing to the success of testing, there was a general expectation the Merge would go through mid year, however the latest setback is unsurprising given that Proof of Stake has been delayed constantly ever since it was first proposed. That said, the signs are promising that the Ethereum mainnet will actually merge with the beacon chain to become a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) network this year. For real. Ethereum developer Tim Beiko provided the updated timeline via …

North Korea-obsessed Ethereum dev gets 5 years for breaking sanctions
Virgil Griffith, a former Ethereum (ETH) developer has been sentenced to 63 months in prison and will pay a fine of $100,000 for attending a conference and assisting North Korea use blockchain technology in contravention of economic sanctions imposed by the United States. On Tuesday, April 12, U.S. District Judge Kevin Castel of the Southern District of New York handed down the decision. Judge Castel stated that “what you see here is intentionality, a deliberate, willful intent to violate the sanctions' regime,” adding that the crime was made worse because Griffith had a “desire to educate people on how to …

Inside the blockchain developers’ mind: Building truly free-to-use DApps
Cointelegraph is following the development of an entirely new blockchain from inception to mainnet and beyond through its series, Inside the Blockchain Developer’s Mind, written by Andrew Levine of Koinos Group. In my previous article, I explained from first principles what was needed to build a truly free-to-use social decentralized application (DApp) and how Koinos is that solution. In that article, I explained that to deliver a truly free-to-use DApp, it must be possible for someone other than the end-user to provide the network resources (“mana” in the case of Koinos) required to run a given smart contract. Blockchain mana …

Crypto trading to move to the metaverse, says developer-focused study
A new study shows that developers believe that the metaverse may become the “most popular” way to buy and sell crypto someday. The study, commissioned by API provider Agora, surveyed 300 developers' thoughts and ideas about the metaverse. "Since they will be positioned on the front lines of practically every development that takes place in the metaverse, their thoughts and opinions ultimately carry a great deal of weight," says Tony Zhao, the founder and CEO of Agora. The survey shows that 57% of developers believe that the metaverse will someday be the most prominent way to trade crypto. However, 1 …

NeoNexus founder pulls the plug on popular Metaverse NFT project
The founder of NeoNexus, a Solana-based NFT project, has stated the team is no longer developing the project, blaming the drop in Solana (SOL) prices for the decision. The project's founder, Jack Shi, took to the official Twitter account for NeoNexus, tweeting at 2 pm UTC on March 21 that it was no longer continuing the “healthy development” of the project, adding they would like to hand it over for the community to develop. It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you that we can no longer continue healthy development of the NEONEXUS project. We would like …

Inside the blockchain developers’ mind: How to avoid development hell
Cointelegraph is following the development of an entirely new blockchain from inception to mainnet and beyond through its series, Inside the Blockchain Developer’s Mind, written by Andrew Levine of Koinos Group. We recently released the third and final version of the Koinos testnet, which is why I want to talk about something few projects like to talk about: Building blockchains is development hell. In this article, I’ll explain why and how other developers can avoid getting stuck in it. At first blush, building a blockchain doesn’t sound so hard. A blockchain is just a combination of well-established cryptographic primitives, which, …

ConsenSys raises $450M in Series D funding, doubles valuation in four months
On Tuesday, ConsenSys, the leading Ethereum (ETH) and decentralized protocols software company with product suites such as MetaMask, Infura, and Truffle, announced the close of a $450 million Series D funding round led by ParaFi Capital. Notable new investors included Temasek, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Microsoft, Anthos Capital, Sound Ventures, and C Ventures. The deal more than doubles its valuation since the firm's $200 million Series C raise in November 2021. Proceeds from the round will in part be converted to ETH to rebalance the ratio of ETH to USD-equivalents in ConsenSys' treasury. The firm actively seeks to use its …

Polygon network suffers from extended service outage after upgrade
Layer-2 Ethereum scaling solution Polygon has not produced a new block for over 11 hours, with developers attributing the issue to a technical upgrade on the network. On March 10 at 4:20 pm UTC, Polygon (MATIC) network developers notified users on the project’s forum that there would likely be downtime starting at about 5:50 pm UTC due to maintenance required on one of the network’s three layers. A recent upgrade is thought to have caused an error in the network’s ability to achieve consensus. “We suspect there may have been a bug in the upgrade which affected consensus and caused …

DeFi 'Godfather' Cronje quits as TVL and tokens tank for related projects
DeFi architect, Fantom Foundation technical advisor, and Yearn Finance founder Andre Cronje has left the decentralized finance (DeFi) space reeling after deactivating his Twitter account. Cronje’s long-time colleague at the Fantom Foundation Anton Nell stated in a Mar. 6 tweet that both he and Cronje were leaving the crypto space entirely. However, concerns have arisen about the fate of the roughly 25 decentralized apps (dApps) and services they have been operating up to now. Fantom Opera is a layer-2 Ethereum scaling solution. Andre and I have decided that we are closing the chapter of contibuting to the defi/crypto space. There …

An overview of the blockchain development lifecycle
How long does it take to create a blockchain? The development phase for blockchain applications can take a few months to a year or longer. It’s important to be strategic and delineate a roadmap. Developers must understand how much time is required to dedicate to each step before proceeding to the next stages. Some questions to ask when going through this step include the following: What are the real-world use cases for this project? Does the project use smart contracts? How soon should early versions be released to attain an MVP? In what ways will blockchain technology integrate into this …

Ruby on Rails creator backpedals about Bitcoin: 'We need crypto'
Canada’s move to freeze Bitcoin (BTC) wallets and bank accounts related to COVID-19 vaccine protests is driving cryptocurrency adoption, with some crypto naysayers reconsidering their stance on Bitcoin. David Heinemeier Hansson, the Ruby on Rails web development framework creator, took to Twitter on Monday to tell his followers that he was no longer a Bitcoin skeptic. “I still can’t believe that this is the protest that would prove every Bitcoin crank a prophet. And for me to have to slice a piece of humble pie, and admit that I was wrong on crypto's fundamental necessity in Western democracies,” Hansson wrote. …

Web3 developer growth hits an all-time high as ecosystem matures
“Web3” may be one of the biggest buzzwords of 2022, but the idea of creating an entirely decentralized platform to host decentralized applications has long been a vision of the crypto community. While it’s notable that some blockchain companies began building out Web3 applications four or five years ago, the Web3 space has only started gaining traction recently. The recent growth of Web3 was highlighted in a new report from Electric Capital, a venture capital firm that has been investing in Web3 companies since 2018. The “Electric Capital 2021 Developer Report” analyzed data from nearly 500,000 code repositories and 160 …
