Moving beyond the crisis narrative: Crypto in a post-pandemic world
Everyone knows the story. When the first block of Bitcoin (BTC) was mined, the protocol itself entered a world of grave economic uncertainty. Not long before the market would hit its lowest point of the 2009 recession, Bitcoin was quietly created, dropped like a life raft alongside a then-sinking economy. The now infamous phrase “Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks” was cribbed from the headlines, immortalized in code in the origin story of one of the most compelling, innovative, best-performing assets of the last decade. But Bitcoin did not immediately take root beyond a small community of true …

US Education Department promotes putting student records on blockchain
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed flaws across various sectors. As a result, a number of government departments are evaluating blockchain-based systems as possible solutions for challenges involving multiparty workflows, record-keeping, transparency and more. For example, the United States Department of Education recently provided funding for the launch of the “Education Blockchain Initiative.” Referred to as the EBI, this project is led by the American Council on Education — an organization that helps the higher education community shape effective public policy — and is designed to identify ways that blockchain can improve data flow between academic institutions and potential employers. Determined …

Air France pilots blockchain-based COVID-19 travel system
With travel and tourism being one of the industries hardest-hit by the coronavirus-pandemic-induced lockdowns, several stakeholders are increasingly prioritizing digital and contactless solutions. In this vein, Air France has partnered with MedAire, SGS, International SOS and the International Chamber of Commerce to test a blockchain-based COVID-19 travel system. Beginning March 11, Air France will begin the pilot test of the ICC AOKpass system developed by MedAire and the International SOS. Charter schools in California to use blockchain system to fight COVID-19
The new applications and measures being implemented by public health authorities across the world during the COVID-19 pandemic have sparked debate over how to balance biosurveillance with individuals' right to the privacy of their personal information. In California, the Collaborative Charter Services Organization, which provides administrative support services to charter schools, has chosen to roll out a pandemic management system that prioritizes its users' data privacy. Called "Team.Care Network," the blockchain solution was developed by healthcare startup Solve.Care and runs as a mobile application. Solve.Care said the solution will help schools to track possible COVID-19 exposure in their community and …

What the COVID-19 pandemic has taught crypto community about curbing our emissions
For the first time ever, the World Economic Forum’s Global Risk Report’s top-five global risks were all climate-related. From devastating wildfires in Australia and the Amazon to ravaging locust plagues on the Horn of Africa, 2020 was punctuated not only by the global COVID-19 pandemic but also a number of worrying reminders about the effects of climate change if left unchecked. Over the past year, we witnessed the severe effects of belated action amid impending crises. While the timeframe for climate change is not measured in days or weeks, climate change headlines over the coming decade may not look dissimilar …

India must revolutionize its digital media industry with blockchain
India has more than 65% of its population below the age of 35, with the average age nationwide being 29 years old. Additionally, out of India’s 1.3 billion people, only half currently use mobile phones, and less than half of this number are smartphones. Even though India is one of the world’s most populated countries, internet usage remains at 41%, with 700 million Indians currently connected to the internet. This leaves incredible room for growth in India, which lags behind other emerging economies when it comes to both internet access and smartphone ownership. This large, underserved population has long been …

Blockchain-based COVID-19 passports to begin trials in Q1
The International Air Transport Association will soon roll out blockchain-based passports that digitally store an individual’s health information — specifically, their COVID-19 testing and vaccination status. In a move that IATA says has the potential to reopen international travel and loosen current global quarantine restrictions, a “health” passport will be stored in a user’s smartphone in the form of an app, with the first real-world testing expected to take place as soon as February. Known as the IATA Travel Pass and described as a way to give travelers complete control over their own data, the app would reportedly also act …

No more pushes and pushbacks: Digital ID solves the privacy dilemma
A year unlike any other, when much of life went online, created a compelling case for digital identity. Talk of “immunity passports,” privacy-protecting contact tracing apps and even a potential move to online voting systems all speak to the need for robust digital identities. In July 2020, the World Economic Forum published a briefing paper covering the risks and opportunities around “the internet of bodies.” From wearable technology to connected medical implants, it’s evident that our future digital identities could comprise more data than we ever thought possible. But the push for digital identity is also provoking strong pushback. The …

Retail traders, not hotshots like MicroStrategy, made Bitcoin in 2020
The twists and turns of 2020 made it arguably the best year on record to be a trader, especially if you were involved in cryptocurrencies. May’s third Bitcoin halving, coupled with the euphoric market volatility that swept global markets, made 2020 a year of gains and opportunities for crypto traders. By November, it was already clear Bitcoin (BTC) and other major cryptocurrencies had cemented their status as a recognized asset class among retail and institutional traders alike, having outshined all other major asset classes in the world. Bitcoin’s renewed bull run deservedly grabbed the headlines across mainstream finance and made …

Why secure data tokenization should scare the hell out of Big Data
Data is becoming one of society’s most valuable resources. And yet, our existing approaches fail to unleash its massive intrinsic value. Why is this the case? The issue is that our data — who we are, and what is relevant about us — is defined and collected by corporations and governments. Consumers were alarmed to find their phones were being tracked by the government , for example. These organizations, whether private or governmental, seem interested primarily in using your personal identity and your data streams to enhance their power. If you are an average user, this means you are missing …

How crypto can make starting a business faster and cheaper
The coronavirus pandemic has shaken up the world of work — igniting an entrepreneurial spirit in the hearts of thousands. A recent article in The Wall Street Journal claimed that applications for new U.S. businesses have been rising at the fastest rate since 2007. But one crypto-focused company says aspiring business owners face a big problem: The current solutions for getting their ideas off the ground are slow, expensive and centralized. Ideaology’s goal is to bring everything that a budding entrepreneur would need under one roof — and the organization has the ambitious target of reaching 100,000 people this year. …
