An eventful week for Bitcoin this week. It ended down nearly 5 percent but at one point, things were looking much worse. A collapse to $8,900 sparked talk of a three-month correction—which could be exacerbated by the expiration of more than 100,000 Bitcoin options next Friday. So far at least, the correction appears to have largely corrected itself but that might be because of the turmoil in the stock markets. Yoni Assia, CEO of eToro, predicts a market crash in three weeks. Bitcoin is currently outperforming the market and acting as a safe haven. The week has been eventful away …
Known for his social media-involved leadership of crypto exchange giant Binance, CEO Changpeng Zhao, or CZ, said he disabled Twitter comments on his posts to weed out the scammers. "To better respond and engage," CZ told Cointelegraph he partially disabled the ability for the public to comment on his tweets. "This is a new feature from Twitter," CZ said on June 11. "It seems it’s only rolled out to a small percentage of people." Social media holds crucial in crypto As an industry based primarily on digital technologies, much of the crypto and blockchain community interacts daily on various social …
In a recent interview with Cointelegraph, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, aka CZ, has lent his expertise on how to set up a global cryptocurrency exchange and outlined four key criteria to follow in order to ensure success. ‘Global mindset’ is a must CZ stressed that having a “global mindset” is a must, as cryptocurrency exchanges who claim to be “global” often tend to focus on just one particular region, thereby greatly limiting their international presence. “First, I’d say you need a global mindset. Many crypto exchanges claim they are a global exchange, but if you look at them closely, they …
For reasons of vanity as well as for those of industry health, it’s important to have a good method for ranking crypto exchanges and coins. But as the past few years have shown, no foolproof method has yet been developed. CoinMarketCap has enjoyed the de facto status of being the leading ranking platform, but according to some, a string of controversies has shaken faith in its ability to provide neutral results. CMC’s first flirtation with scandal happened when Bitwise published a report suggesting 95% of the volume reported on the website was fake. The revelation rocked the sector, as many …
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin says the current financial crisis is very different to the 2008 Global Financial Crisis that Bitcoin emerged from — and that the crypto community needs to adjust its thinking accordingly. Writing in a Twitter thread on June 2, Buterin said that some of Bitcoin’s most dearly held narratives had not been borne out this time around. Pandemic and protests The Ethereum (ETH) co-founder said 2020 is not a repeat of the financial crisis in 2008/2009. Rather, he tweeted, it is a “virus crisis”, a crisis of “epistemology” and one of “overbearing policing”. He challenged the idea …

For an industry that is supposed to be based upon decentralization, it appears to be getting crowded at the top, with a number of companies transforming into unspoken oligarchs, each wielding huge influence — or at least that’s what some critics argue. One of the most remarkable crypto companies operating today is Binance. In only three short years, Binance has enjoyed a meteoric rise to the top. Criticism of Binance, philosophical or otherwise, can’t fail to take into account the impressive stream of innovation the firm seems to channel. Headed by Changpeng Zhao, the Twitter-happy CEO better known as CZ, …
Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange and owner of crypto pricing website CoinMarketCap, is getting closer to one of the most crypto-sceptical jurisdictions in the world, China. Binance.cn, Binance’s new Chinese domain, has been registered with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). According to public data by the MIIT, the new domain was approved by the state authority in early April 2020. Binance.cn domain details on the MIIT. In a recent tweet, Binance (BNB) CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) may have inadvertently admitted his involvement in the management of the recently acquired CoinMarketCap (CMC). Following in Elon Musk’s footsteps? Zhao’s tweet from May 14 seemingly admits his involvement in managing CMC: Source: Twitter If he is not involved in the managerial decisions of CMC, including the configuration of various metrics, then it raises the question — why is the CEO of Binance making public statements that suggest otherwise? At the very least, this resembles public pressure on CMC’s management. The situation is reminiscent of a Twitter-enabled gaffe by Elon …
An address associated with the $50 million hack of South Korean crypto exchange, Upbit, has moved some of the stolen Ethereum (ETH) to Binance. The world's biggest exchange immediately froze these funds on its platform, and has initiated an investigation. On May 13, Whale Alert tweeted that a 137 ETH ($27,164) transaction was moving funds derived from hacked Upbit exchange to Binance. According to the transaction details, the transfer occurred at 12 p.m. EST. Less than one hour after the transaction was flagged, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, or CZ, stepped in to the tweet thread to report that the transferred …
As Zhao told Cointelegraph on May 4, the April 29 attack was “well-coordinated” and focused on making Binance services unavailable in some countries of Asia. Competitors behind the attacks? Zhao emphasized that there are “a number of tell-tale” signs that such attacks came from competing exchanges. In the statement, Binance’s CEO stated that DDoS attacks were more expensive for hackers than for the exchange itself. CZ provided more details regarding specific DDoS targets: “The attacks focused on all of our public endpoints in those targeted regions simultaneously. We use a wide range of caching, clustering, and distribution services to optimize …
Over the past week, Cointelegraph has participated in Virtual Blockchain Week — a pandemic-proof crypto conference that invited participants from all over the world to join talks with some of Blockchain’s greatest luminaries. At the start of the week, famed venture capitalist, Tim Draper, doubled down on his prediction that Bitcoin (BTC) will reach $250K per coin by 2023. “That's my prediction. Sticking with it. I'm very confident that that is going to happen.” said Draper, when pressed on the topic. He believes that massive commercial adoption around the world will send Bitcoin’s price into the stratosphere. This gels well …
