First Francophone Bitcoin Conference Coming to Paris

Published at: Sept. 12, 2014

This October, Paris will be welcoming the first French-speaking Bitcoin conference in the Euro zone, an event that will feature prominent names in the industry including representatives from BlockChain.info, the Bitcoin Foundation and political French figures.

Euro Bitcoin will take place on October 8 2014 at the François Mitterrand site of the Bibiliothèque nationale de France (French National Library) in Paris and Cointelegraph is proud to announce that it will take part as an official media sponsor.

The even will focus on 3 main objectives: educate on the Bitcoin protocol and the ecosystem, communicate on cryptocurrencies' challenges for banks, multinational firms, SMEs and startups, and debate with philosophers, technology experts and economists on digital currencies' future.

In a blog announcement, the Association Bitcoin France stated the event would be mostly dedicated to tackle national issues through interventions and round tables. Philosophic, economical and political discussions will all question the future of digital currencies in our system. The organization said to be targeting 20% of experts and 80% of novices. The speaker’s panel is mostly composed of French lecturers, although the event also features internationally renowned figures from the industry.

The event will be split in 5 parts, starting with an introduction from author and French philosopher Jacques Attali.

BlockChain.info CEO Nic Cary along with some prominent French names in the ecosystem will speak on the topic of 'Use and Innovation'. Global Policy Counsel, Jim Harper and Bitcoin Core Developer, Jeff Garzik will also be present at the Conference.

Businesswoman and former president of the French political party Medef Laurence Parisot, Union for a Popular Movement (conservative) deputy Laure de la Raudière, and socialist party (democrate) deputy Karine Berger, will tackle the regulation topic.

Monetary and sovereign debts specialist Gilles Mentré, European Bitcoin exchange Paymium CEO Pierre Noizat, and economist Nicolas Bouzou, will talk about the economical challenges.

Other French speakers, including e-commerce retailer ShowRoomPrivé CEO Thierry Petit, will tackle the topic of 'Markets'.

Association Bitcoin France president Philippe Rodriguez will finally conclude the event with his closing remarks.

Euro Bitcoin is an initiative from French Association Bitcoin France, the Belgian Bitcoin Association and Swiss Bitcoin Association Switzerland.

The event is funded by entry tickets and sponsorships from leading companies in the industry including BitPay, Coinbase, Paymium, Lamassu Bitcoin Ventures, Circle and many more.

While few political figures have rejected Bitcoin, France has been globally taking a rather welcoming approach towards digital currencies, and the French Senate recently issued a positive report on its perspectives in the economy. The echo-system has been rapidly growing and multiple French startups are engaging in ambitious projects to bring Bitcoin to the masses. Toulouse-based MineOnCloud recently announced the third Bitcoin ATM in France and stated that several brick-and-mortar businesses are already accepting payments in bitcoins, including restaurants and medical professionals.

Pro-blockchain narratives hinder Bitcoin adoption, says StackinSat founder
Over a decade-long evolution later, for self-justified personal reasons, a handful of the crypto community members chose to believe in siding against Bitcoin (BTC), resulting in a narrative that preached "blockchain is great, Bitcoin is bad." Josselin Tonnellier, the founder of Bitcoin exchange StackinSat and organizer of the Surfin' Bitcoin 2022, believes that this particular notion is one of the main barriers to broader BTC adoption in France. In an exclusive interview with Cointelegraph reporter Joseph Hall, Tonnellier discussed several important topics, including the adoption of Bitcoin and crypto in France, the origins and goals of the Surfin' Bitcoin conference, …

Most blockchain advocates haven't even used Bitcoin
Bitcoin (BTC) popularised the term blockchain. Blockchains, or “decentralized and distributed digital ledgers used to record transactions across a network of computers,” have been around for over thirty years, the household name for a blockchain is Bitcoin. That’s despite the fact that the Genesis block was mined well over 14 years ago when George W. Bush was president and “I Gotta Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas topped the charts–Bitcoin is still top of the blocks. It’s to be expected, then, that most blockchain advocates would have used, understood or a the very least experimented with Bitcoin. Nope. Not so. Here’s …
